SPE-130, Communication Skills

This course focuses on learning and applying interpersonal communication skills such as active listening, I messages, and conflict resolution. Students receive an introduction to the basic concepts in therapeutic dialogue as they relate to the client-therapist relationship. Self-awareness and exploration are taught and experienced as a focus for the art of self-help. Students learn to recognize the red flags of communication problems and professional burnout and learn how to correct them. Students are also trained to recognize the warning signs of mental health trauma and when to make appropriate referrals to qualified professionals. Ethics, empathy, and compassionate regard for the client will also be included.
